Sneak peak of the forthcoming Splash Biome Tunnel Book!

It’s been a long time in the making, but I’m happy to be able to finally share with you a sneak peak at the forthcoming Splash Biome Tunnel Book I have been developing!

For quite some time now I have though the Totem Poppets needed a home. I wanted to make sure that it was both interesting and educational and also customizable. The pages fit a standard 3 ring binder and come preshaoed to look like a Splash that is receding as you turn the pages. Here are 6 pages total, each made from a nice stiff 100% recycled chipboard.

So to that effect, here a short flip through of the finished prototype of the Splash Biome Tunnel Book due to be released in the fall!

Make an Easy DIY Wall Decor with the Totem Grasshopper

How to make easy canvas DIY wall decor:

I chose the Mandala Stencil form Clear Snap for my background on the small canvas. The canvas is a small square deep canvas you can buy in a 4 pack from Micheal’s Arts and Crafts.

Mix black gesso and mat medium

I then mixed black gesso and heavy mat medium and applied it with a dabbing motion to the stencil.

While the canvas was drying I sued the extra black gesso to paint the Totem Grasshopper black. This will make your colors pop more. I added dabs of blue and green and swipes of purple to the Totem Grasshopper’s limbs using Clearsnaps’ pigment Izinks.  Pigment inks last longer and are not supposed to fade with exposure to sunlight.

Once dried, I popped out his pieces and assembled him using our new blue mini brads and purple mini brads!

Expand on the Idea:

Add some words with stickers or stamps!

(Tip: add some extra glue to the backs of the letters to get them to stick to the mat medium.)

I used a phrase from the last sentence of the short write up on the Totem Poppet Grasshopper. Each design comes with its own short write-up to inspire your creativity.

Adding sticker letters.

Here is my son helping me add some letters to our finished wall decor.

My son, (who is 4) helped me add the gesso and the stickers. 🙂 (You can see my second one, to the left wanting to help to. He’s trying to each the header card from the stickers. lol!)

Here is the finished DIY wall decor canvas. I don’t know if you can see the raise texture of the background but the heavy gel medium mixed with the black gesso makes peaked textures.

I liked the sort of off kilter way my son added the letters to the canvas. (The stickers didn’t like sticking to the glossiness and the raised surface of the gesso, so I ended adding a touch of super glue to each one to make them permanent.)

Try making a set of two, three or even four canvas using different Totem Poppets to make a statement!
