So, we tested several different eyelet setter tools and the results are in!

Our favorite was….

1. The Fiskar 3 Pieces Eyelet Setter Tools!
Pros:

  • They are small and compact and can be carried in a pencil bag.
  • They don’t have any extra pieces to loose.
  • They don’t require any other tools.
  • There is a hole punch on one side and an eyelet setter tool on the other.
  • The sizes are labeled on the side.
  • When setting the eyelets they flare them consistently almost every single time.
  • They work great with the short 1/16″ brass eyelets.

Cons:

  • They are loud. They make a nice loud “twacking” sound when you set an eyelet.
  • They will leave a dent in your work surface so make sure to use a old chopping block or protect your surface in some way.

2. Our Second Choice was the Memory Maker Universal Eyelet Setters

Pros:

  • Solid construction
  • Separate flare tip
  • Three different size flattening tips.

Cons:

  • You constantly have to screw on and screw off the tips to set the eyelets so it takes twice as long to set an eyelet. This can add up if you are setting a lot of eyelets.
  • The handle and the separate tips roll and are easy to loose. They do not come with a box or anything to store them in.
  • You also need a hammer.

3. Our Third Choice was The ProvoCraft Silent Setter

We really, really, really wanted to like this set! But, it just plain old didn’t work with the short 1/16″ brass eyelets. You would need A LOT of arm strength to make this work with more solid metal eyelets like the kind we were using. Either that, or you would need to mangle the tool by hitting the nice ergonomically correct rounded top with a hammer.

Pros:

  • Comes with and has a really nice case for storing the tools, the tips, the eyelets and even a little setting board!
  • Comes with 6 tips – 3 different size hole punches and 3 different size eyelet setters.
  • Tips are magnetic and slip into the tool quickly and easily.
  • It is silent.

Cons:

  • It does not work with harder metal eyelets.
  • Requires some arm and hand strength.
  • You need to get right over top of the tool and make sure you are pushing and twisting STRAIGHT down.
